In Ayurveda, whether you are doing well depends on whether your lifestyle supports your basic state (Prakuti) or upsets it. Vata is considered in India to be the principle of movement. On a physical level, this refers to the movement of bodily fluids, which involve the transport of nutrients, the removal of waste from cells, the excretion of utilized nutrients, the movement of lymphatic fluid, as well as respiration and the nervous system. At the same time, Vata represents flexibility and creativity, which you express in your life. This dosha is primarily expressed through the elements of space and air.



On the physical level, Pitta – the principle of transformation – can be seen in the metabolic and hormonal systems. The Ayurvedic type determines your daily life

This means that diet, exercise, sleeping habits, yoga positions, and the entire daily routine must be tailored to your constitution so that these things are in harmony with the Ayurvedic type that you are. For example, in summer you should avoid anything that causes extra heat if you are dominated by Pitta. This means that cooling food is better for you, and you should hold back on physical exertion as long as summer temperatures prevail.


The ratio of the five elements also changes during the day, so that one dosha may be dominant in the morning, while another dosha may be dominant in the evening. For example, Vata is naturally dominant in the fall, while Pitta increases in the summer and Kapha energy increases through winter and early spring.


Ayurveda and your diet

Your diet is also composed on the five elements, so you can strengthen your health with the foods that suit your Ayurvedic type.


Sweet foods – elements earth and water

Sour foods – elements earth and fire

Salty foods – water and fire

Bitter foods – air and space

Spicy foods – fire and air

Contracting foods (bitter and sour) – air and earth


These tastes have very specific effects on each of the doshas:

Sweet: Increases kapha and decreases vata and pitta

Bitter: Increases Vata and decreases Pitta and Kapha


For your diet, this means that you can adapt your food to your Ayurvedic type and thus positively influence your health. Additionally, the condition of the food you use (raw or cooked) will also affect your well-being.
